Dalhousie University is excited to announce a unique opportunity for professional artists to create a captivating mural in the Dentistry Department of our institution. Sponsored by GreenShield, this project aims to enhance the atmosphere of the campus dental clinic, create a welcoming environment for our students and patients, and showcase the intersection of art and dentistry.

Eligibility

This Call for Submissions is open to both emerging and established artists who have a passion for creating visually stunning and engaging murals. While we welcome applications from artists of all backgrounds and experiences, submissions from African Nova Scotian artists will be prioritized as we believe in the importance of diverse cultural resonance in this project.

Theme

The theme for the mural is one that reflects the following three social impact pillars:

  • Building inclusive communities;
  • Driving a sustainable future;
  • Creating shared values by addressing social needs

Specifications

  1. A blank wall inside the dentistry building

    Please note, the garbage bins will be removed prior to installation

    Location: The mural will be located in the Dentistry Building of Dalhousie University, in the lobby of the outreach clinic, a prominent and visible area.

  2. Size: The wall available for the mural measures 145” wide x 80” tall
  3. Medium: Artists are encouraged to propose their preferred medium, but it should be suitable for an indoor, long-lasting mural.

Submission Guidelines

Interested artists are invited to submit the following materials:

  1. A portfolio of 5-8 digital images, showcasing previous mural work or relevant artwork.
  2. A one page concept proposal for the mural, including sketches or digital renderings.
  3. A brief artist statement (500 words) explaining how your proposal aligns with the theme. If applicable, include your connection to the African Nova Scotian Community within this statement.

Selection Process

A panel of representatives from Dalhousie University, including faculty members and art consultants will review the submissions. The selected artist will be notified by March 6, 2024.

Compensation

The selected artist will receive:

– A stipend of $5,000 for the creation of the mural.

– Coverage of material and installation costs.

– Recognition and publicity through Dalhousie University’s communication channels.

Timeline

– Submission Deadline: February 23, 2024

– Artist Selection: March 6, 2024

– Mural Creation: March 11 – April 5, 2024
