Design Exchange Names StudioAC the 2019 RBC Canadian Emerging Designer Competition Winner
Design Exchange (DX), in partnership with RBC Foundation, has announced Toronto’s Studio for Architecture & Collaboration (StudioAC) the winner of the 2019 RBC Canadian Emerging Designer Competition. Founded in 2015 and led by led by Andrew Hill (MArch ’12) and Jennifer Kudlats (MArch ’10), Studio for Architecture & Collaboration is an interdisciplinary architectural practice with an initiative to produce impactful architecture that speaks to its context at a multitude of scales.
‘Infill can be beautiful’: City announces winner of ‘missing middle’ design competition
Alumni Firm Studio North and partners have won Edmonton’s “Missing Middle” Infill Design Competition. ‘Missing middle’ refers to housing that falls between single-detached homes and high-rise apartment buildings, such as row houses, apartment buildings and fourplexes. The developments are referred to as “missing” because they can be hard to find in larger cities.
Aging and housing: cultural perspectives
Through an estate gift, the late architect, H. Allen Brooks, established a travelling fellowship in the School of Architecture and Planning to support an architecture student or recent graduate. For Monica Leung (MArch’11) it was an opportunity to study elder housing with a global lens.
Dal MPlan grads named to the provincial standards on accessibility committee
Two graduates of our Master of Planning program have been named to the provincial standards on accessibility committee. Thirty-nine Nova Scotians including Saira Shah (MPlan ’17) and Jennifer Powley (MPlan ’09) will help develop the province’s first accessibility standards.
ArchPlan Alumni Shine as Star Employers in our Co-op Programs
For the 3rd consecutive year, the co-op offices across all of our programs worked together to jointly recognize top co-op employers across Dalhousie. The event took place on Wednesday, March 20th and 12 awards were given in 12 categories. We are extremely proud that 3 of the finalists for these awards are employers that are also alumni of our programs.
Dalhousie Alumni represented in 2018 Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence program
Canadian Architect has announced a total of fourteen awards in its annual Awards of Excellence program. The School of Architecture is represented by Acton Ostry Architects Inc. (Mark Ostry, BArch ’85) with an Award of Excellence and new grad Joshua Nieves (MArch ’18), with a Student Award of Excellence for his design thesis. These awards are the highest recognition for excellence in the design stage in the Canadian architectural sector.
Nine Yards Studio’s urban beehive project wins RAIC National Urban Design Award
Nine Yards Studio, Charlottetown PEI, is receiving an Urban Design Award from the RAIC (Royal Architectural Institute of Canada) for their Urban Beehive Project. The project is receiving a medal under the Community Initiatives Award category in the 2018 National Urban Design Awards.
New Planning alumni are winners of the CMHC National Student Competition for Affordable Rental Housing
Lina el-Setouhy (BCD ’18), Chloe Espiard (BCD ’18), Mitch Gold (BCD ’18) and Juniper Littlefield (BCD ’18) are one of three teams to be awarded the competition’s top prize of $10,000. The group submitted their final studio project, “The Jetty: An Affordable Housing Cooperative”.
Jane Casson (MArch ’18) wins ACSA 2018 Designing Healthy Places Competition
Janne Casson’s (MArch ’18) design, entitled Caregive + Caretake, was awarded Winner in the Housing for Aging category in the ACSA 2018 Designing Healthy Places Competition. It will be exhibited at the ACSA 107th Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA in March 2019.
