Students find co-op success among pandemic challenges
When COVID-19 shutdowns started rolling out this spring, MArch and MPlan students grappled with working from home, layoffs, hiring freezes, and a general tightening of budgets across all sectors. In spite of these challenges and with the help of dedicated employers, a hard-working co-op office, government funding, and the support of the Schools of Architecture and Planning, the majority of these students have now completed their work terms. We highlight the following examples.
Alumni firms head up winning team of Art Gallery design competition
KPMB Architects with Omar Gandhi Architect, Jordan Bennett Studio, Elder Lorraine Whitman (NWAC), Public Work and Transsolar have been selected as the winning team of the international design competition for the new Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Waterfront Arts District.
Re-imagining award winning architecture
Run by partners and Dal alumni Jane Abbott (MArch ’06) and Alec Brown (MArch ’93), Abbott Brown Architects is the recipient of two 2019 Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Merit for Excellence in Architecture.

School of Architecture Alumni recognized with Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence
The Office of Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor, in association with the Nova Scotia Association of Architects, is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Architecture. The recipients are all alumni of the School of Architecture.
Alumna highlights lack of diversity in published letter to Canadian Architect
Allison Gonsalves (MArch ’08) recently composed a letter to the editor at Canadian Architect magazine on the topic pf the lack diversity in the profession and the Magazine. It was published in the October issue of the Canadian Architect magazine.
School of Architecture launches “Lead with your Heart Design competition”
The Lead with your Heart design competition is open to current students as well as graduates of the School of Architecture and is to design and name a bench made of wood in memory of Lucas Austin. The winning design will be constructed by a builder who has been commissioned for the project. The bench will be installed in a small park next to the Canadian Mental Health Association building, Truro, Nova Scotia. There is a $1000 prize for the winning design.
