Tom Coolen at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Tom Coolen (BPE’80) had a successful run to the quarterfinals in Sochi as assistant coach of the Latvian men’s hockey team. The team’s Olympic bid ended with a 2-1 loss to Canada, who eventually won the gold medal.

“When it was 1-1 with seven minutes left,” Coolen says, “they were tense. You could feel it. We all know what that’s like but we had nothing to lose.”

Coolen previously coached the Acadia Axemen to their first national hockey championship in 1993.
