Monique Auffrey (BSW’01, MSW’03) was recently named CTV Calgary’s Inspiring Albertan of the Week for her dedication to helping women and children fleeing family violence.

A two-time alumna of Dalhousie’s School of Social Work, Auffrey is now Director of Programs at the Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society in Calgary.

Auffrey’s passion for helping victims of family violence stems from more than her educational background – it is also driven by her personal experience.

While completing her Master’s in Social Work at Dal, Auffrey herself was a victim of domestic violence. She only began speaking publicly about her experience once she began working at Discovery House, realizing that by sharing her experience, she could help fight the stigma against other victims of domestic abuse.
