As a finance manager by day and a craft beer enthusiast by night, Matthew Boudreau (BComm’11) combined his passion with his profession when he became the co-owner of Serpent Brewing. Brewing Belgian-inspired ales, it is the first craft brewery in the community of Spryfield, N.S.

Serpent Brewing has quickly established itself as a must-visit for live music, trivia nights and, of course, great beer.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I have had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was a young. I remember some of my favorite video games were simulation games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Sim Theme Park. I have always enjoyed the challenge of figuring out how to make a business run efficiently.

My first venture was a non-profit I started after graduation, the Atlantic Commerce Scholarship Association, which raised money for students from Atlantic Canada studying business within the region. Our team ran it part-time for three years and distributed a few thousand dollars to students in need.

What is it like owning a brewery while maintaining a separate career?

Serpent is definitely a passion project, but obviously the reality is that I spend a lot of time doing paperwork (payroll, taxes, etc.), so even though there is a lot of joy I get from owning a brewery there is still a lot of responsibility. It can be challenging working another full-time day job as a finance manager; but that is where my business partner steps in, and we balance our responsibilities together.

What is your favourite part of owning/operating Serpent Brewing?

The social engagement with our patrons, staff, and community. It has been fun to build a network of individuals and businesses that have become part of the Serpent family. Whether it is fundraising for a good cause or hosting a trivia night, being able to contribute to the Spryfield community has been rewarding.

What advice would you give someone considering running their own business?

It is important to have a good team of people to support you, whether that is through friends, family, or your professional network. If the last few years have taught us anything, it is to prepare for the unexpected as well.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I love to travel, usually to visit breweries or attend concerts. I am a passionate hockey fan and cheer for the Ottawa Senators. I am always up for a board game night or an escape room.
