Dr. Jeff Dahn (BSc (Physics)’78) is a physics and chemistry professor at Dalhousie University. In 2000, he collaborated with 3M, a company that manufactures battery components, to develop new lithium-ion battery technology.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently re-confirmed the patent for this technology, which is used in 35% of the world’s lithium batteries. While the technology’s royalties go to 3M, it was the company’s support of an industrial research chair at Dal, co-funded with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), that made the work possible.
