Leslie Gallagher (BA’12) has just returned from the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance summit in Istanbul, Turkey, where she was the sole representative from Nova Scotia.

From September 7-9, Gallagher joined 21 other Canadians and almost 600 young entrepreneurs from around the world to discuss opportunities and challenges pertinent to entrepreneurship and to craft recommendations for global leaders.

Gallagher launched her own business, WorkLocal.jobs, less than a year ago. The company connects job-seekers with employers in Halifax, aiming to change the perception that there are no jobs in Halifax and to help small businesses access local talent. At the summit, Gallagher learned that there are markets for her services all over the world, from South Africa to Turkey to Maine, USA.

In fact, what may have inspired Gallagher most of all is the concept of going “glocal”, or starting with local markets and expanding globally. She plans to expand her own business beyond Halifax, beginning with other areas in the Maritimes, and perhaps taking the suggestions of some of her summit colleagues to expand internationally sooner than later.
