Dr. Sultan Darvesh examines two human brains in his lab; one healthy, and one from an Alzheimer’s patient.

Dr. Sultan Darvesh (MD’88, PGM’93) and his team of researchers have discovered an enzyme that can better indicate cases of Alzheimer’s disease. Successful clinical trials could result in a new method of Alzheimer’s testing.

The new process could significantly increase diagnostic accuracy.

Dr. Darvesh’s discovery comes after 20 years of extensive research, aided by the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank and its 900 donated brains.

“It’s very satisfying,” says Dr. Darvesh. “It gives us encouragement that we’re on the right track.”
