Biology professor Daniel Ruzzante’s (MSc’86, PhD’91) research team recently received $539,423 in funding from NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) to study genetic differences in herring. The funds were awarded from NSERC’s strategic partnerships grant program.

The team partnered with the University of Uppsala in Sweden to study genetic diversity in herring with the goal of creating more robust and efficient fisheries management. They are studying herring from Newfoundland to Maine.

Researching genetic diversity within the species can yield clues to concerns like population decline, and other issues related to climate shifts and ocean temperature. Students and staff working on the project will receive the funding.
