His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced 100 new appointments to the Order of Canada on July 1. Several of the new appointees have Dalhousie connections.

Bill Black

 

William (Bill) Black (BA’70, BSc’70) was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for his corporate contributions and community leadership in Nova Scotia. Black formerly served on Dalhousie’s Board of Governors as a member of the Governance & Nominating and Human Resources Committees. He was president and CEO of Maritime Life for nine years and a former chairman of the IWK Hospital, the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, and Symphony Nova Scotia, and past Lead Director of the Bank of Canada.

 

Martin Chernin was appointed as a member for helping the development of Cape Breton island. Chernin attended Dalhousie as did his wife, Gail Chernin, QC (BComm’78, LLB’86).

Susan SherwinFormer Dalhousie research professor in the Department of Philosophy, Dr Susan Sherwin earned the order as a member for her work in feminist bioethics. She was named Distinguished Woman Philosopher of the Year in 2004 by the Society for Women in Philosophy (U.S.), was the recipient of the Sarah Shorten Award for her contributions to the status of women in Canadian universities, and won the distinguished Killam Prize in Humanities in 2006.

Two Dalhousie honorary degree recipients were also named to the order. Author Lawrence Hill (LLD’14) was recognized as a member for his critically acclaimed Book of Negroes, and his advocacy work for women and girls in Africa.

Janet Rossant (LLD’05) was appointed companion of the Order of Canada for “advancing the global understanding of embryo development and stem cell biology, and for her national and international leadership in health science.”
