Several Dalhousie alumni were recognized as Canada’s Most Powerful Women – Top 100 in 2017 by the Women’s Executive Network.

Sara Austin (BA’98) is Founder & Lead Director, Children First Canada and CEO of Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre. She was inducted to the network’s Hall of Fame for her work advocating on behalf of women and children. Austin also serves on the Board of the Dalhousie Alumni Association.

Three alumni were listed in the HSBC Corporate Executives category.

Christine Cooper (MBA’99) is Head of the Canadian Corporate Finance Division, North American Commercial Banking with BMO Financial Group. She advocates passionately for building strong communities through her work as a speaker, fundraiser and board member.

Sandy Sharman (MBA’03) is Senior Executive Vice-President and Chief Human Resources & Communications Officer for CIBC. Sharman creates  a diverse and inclusive team through the development and delivery of clearly-focused talent and people strategies.

Caroline Zayid (LLB’88, BA’85, BSc’82) is a Partner and National Litigation Practice Group Leader at McCarthy Tetrault LLP. She acted on behalf of the Canadian Human Rights Commission in the first successful prosecution of a case concerning promotion of hatred on the internet.

In the TELUS Future Leaders category, Maike van Niekerk (BScN’17) was included. She is Chief Executive Officer of Katrin’s Karepackage, which aims to offset travel costs for cancer patients living in rural communities in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. As Dalhousie’s 90th Rhodes Scholar, van Niekerk will be studying a PhD in Psychiatry at the University of Oxford.

In addition, Ulrike Bahr-Gedalia is the director of Dalhousie’s Faculty of Computer Science  Industry Advisory Board, a position she has held since 2013. She is President & CEO at Digital Nova Scotia. Bahr-Gedalia was honoured as an RBC Champion for her work driving economic empowerment and innovation through diversity and inclusion.
