Chris-Cowper-Smith_BDC-Young-Entrepreneur-Award

Halifax entrepreneur and Dalhousie PhD candidate in neuroscience Chris Cowper-Smith (BSc’06, MSc’09) has been chosen as the Nova Scotia finalist for the $100,000 BDC Young Entrepreneur Award Contest. As president of Spring Loaded Technology, Cowper-Smith and his team have built an affordable and compact spring-loaded knee brace to treat individuals with knee injury, osteoarthritis, or a disability. The technology is akin to what is found in aircraft landing gear in terms of the complexity of the shock absorption and spring mechanism.

Cowper-Smith’s life-changing technology and his plan for commercialization has resulted in his selection and given him a 1 in 10 chance of bringing home the prize. The prize will make it possible for him to bring to market the world’s first compact, light-weight and affordable bionic knee brace.
