Dr. Elwood MacMullin, Dr. Rex Dunn, and Guatemalan interns

Dalhousie alumni and students have been committed to making a lasting impact on the world for almost 200 years. For Dr. Elwood MacMullin (MD’76), putting his Dal medical degree into practice is not just about making a difference at home in Nova Scotia, but also about improving access to medical care around the world.

The Sydney, NS surgeon has traveled internationally to perform volunteer surgical work several times. In 2008, he spent six weeks in Arusha, Tanzania providing general, orthopaedic and obstetrical/gynecological care. In 2014 and again in early 2015, Dr. MacMullin led a team of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and nurses to Guatemala to perform often life-changing surgeries on predominantly rural Mayan patients. His team is currently preparing for a third trip to Guatemala in 2016.

Despite the lengthy preparations and significant fund-raising required to make each trip possible, Dr. MacMullin views the opportunity to share his time and expertise globally as a privilege.
