Just before the start of the new year, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced 69 new appointments to the Order of Canada.

Three Dalhousie alumni and one honorary degree recipient are among the six new Companions, 14 new Officers, and 49 new Members of the Order of Canada:

  • David Bissett (LLB’62, LLD’03) was appointed a Member of the Order “for his contributions as a financial management executive and philanthropist whose support has boosted initiatives in education, health care, the environment and more.”
  • Catherine Callbeck (BEd’63) was named a Member of the Order “for her contributions to the citizens of Prince Edward Island as a former politician and senator, and as a business and community leader.”
  • Dr. Arthur B. McDonald (BSc’64, MSc’65, LLD’97), recipient of the 2015 Nobel prize in physics, was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada “for his eminent contributions to particle physics, which have broadened our understanding of the universe and brought renown to Canadian science.”
  • The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy (LLD’01), former Minister of Foreign Affairs, was promoted to Companion of the Order “for his principled contributions to international human rights and for his leadership in post-secondary education, particularly in support of Aboriginal students.”

Dalhousie professors Dr. Mary Anne White and Dr. Frederic Wien also joined the December 30 appointments to the Order of Canada.
