L-R: Energy Minister Andrew Younger (BSc’98), Danielle Fong (BSc’05), co-founder and chief scientist at LightSail Energy, and Stan Mason, president of Watts Wind Energy.

Child prodigy Danielle Fong (BSc (Computer Science, Physics)’05 may have discovered the energy industry’s ‘holy grail’: a way to store renewable, or green, energy.

Fong began taking classes at Dalhousie at age 12. At 17, she began PhD studies at Princeton University. She is now based in Berkeley, CA, where she co-founded LightSail Energy in 2008.

Fong’s compressed air approach to storage could revolutionize the energy industry, including reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

With the support of backers like Bill Gates, LightSail will begin testing its technology outside of the lab, in Queen’s County, NS
