Peter Efthymiadis (BA’06)

Peter Efthymiadis first realized his interest in architecture when studying at Dalhousie. Since then, his passion has blossomed into a creative endeavour.

Peter Efthymiadis (BA’06) released his photobook, Daltecture as part of Halitecture, a project that captures photos of architecture in and around Halifax. Peter has published these photos in a photobook, as well as creating a series of notecards that are all available to purchase.

The photography includes heritage and modern buildings. There is something very nostalgic about the older buildings on campus. These buildings have been a pillar of Dalhousie for years. There have been many architectural additions to the campus as of late, and these modern buildings are also included in the photo book.

“I think there is a respect for the past even with the modern structures. For example, the Marian McCain building uses a type of sandstone used in traditional buildings,” noted Efthymiadis.

All over Halifax, we are experiencing a shift from historical buildings to modern architectural aesthetics. The Halifax Central Library and the new Halifax Convention Centre are two noteworthy additions to the local architectural landscape.

This trend is mirrored at Dal. As part of the Dal 200th celebrations was the opening of the IDEA project, the newly remodeled Dentistry clinic, in addition to the upcoming refurbishment of the Dalhousie Arts Centre. These are just a sample of the architectural development occurring on campus.

Peter chose to focus on Dalhousie because it’s where his love of architecture began. “I am a proud alumnus of the university. Of all the places in Halifax, I am most inspired to explore my love for architecture at the Dalhousie University campus,” said Efthymiadis.

When asked what he hopes to create by sharing these images he said, “I hope that the photos are able to conjure up all the great memories that alumni have from the university. Architecture is evocative; we have emotional attachments to the various campus building. There is a sense of pride in the architecture.”
