It has only been two years since Leonie van Haeren (BSc’14)Leonie van Haeren (BSc'14) graduated from Dalhousie, but the experiences she’s had would leave one thinking it’s been much longer. Including a recent stint with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Australia.

“I was thrilled to have the opportunity to gain some insight into the diplomatic world and work towards enhancing the mutual relationship between the two countries.”

Connecting with her roots

Working in the Trade and Economic Affairs Department, Leonie focused on a wide range of economic, political and policy topics and developments, including trade agreements and Australia’s international relations. It also provided an opportunity to have a job that incorporated her Dutch heritage.

“My family and I moved to Canada in 2008. While I call Canada home now, my Dutch heritage is a big part of who I am.”

Leonie says moving to Canada was one of the single most important events in her life, and notes that many of the opportunities she’s had otherwise wouldn’t have happened, including her Dalhousie education.

Prepared for success

“My education in economics gave me the skills and background necessary to move forward and pursue my master’s degree. What I gained during my undergrad days definitely translated when it was time to take the next step.”

Today, Leonie is pursuing a master’s degree in International Affairs at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University

As part of her master’s work, she has also held the position of Economist/Policy Analyst with Natural Resources Canada. Currently, she is working as an International Development Officer with Global Affairs Canada, where she’s been since she returned from Australia.

Building connections

While she’s gained plenty of insight and knowledge through these experiences, one thing she’s learned is that one key to success is building connections.

“I think it’s important to reach out to people who can provide insight into an area or field you are interested in,” says Leonie. “Whether you’re seeking career advice or looking for new opportunities, you never know where it could lead.”

Now just months away from completing her master’s degree, Leonie is looking forward to the next chapter, and it’s obvious she will be an asset wherever her tenacity and talent take her.
