William (Bill) Black (BA’70, BSc’70), a former member of Dalhousie’s Board of Governors and recent appointee to the Order of Canada, has been named chairman Bill Blackof the board of Canada’s emerging national securities regulator.

The Capital Markets Regulatory Authority is still under development and attempting to gain support across all of Canada in order to nationally oversee stock markets and regulate securities. The proposed regulator is currently supported by the federal government as well as by Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon. Once in practice, the regulator will be jointly run by participating provinces and territories.

Black will play a central role in unifying support for the national regulator across provinces and territories, building on his expertise in business, financial markets, and on several important boards, ranging from Dalhousie’s to that of the Bank of Canada. Accordingly, CEO of the Investment Industry Association of Canada Ian Russell praised Black as “an excellent choice” for the role.
