Marine biology and oceanography grad writes award-winning article
Julie van der Hoop (BSc’10) is the 2017 recipient of the F.G. Wood Memorial Scholarship Award bestowed by the Society for Marine Mammalogy. A major in marine biology and oceanography at Dalhousie, van der Hoop then studied at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Now living in Denmark, she will return to Halifax to present this collaborative work at the 22nd Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in October.
Her winning manuscript, in collaboration with other authors, was selected from those submitted for publication in Marine Mammal Science. Titled “Drag from fishing gear entangling North Atlantic right whales,” it explores the pervasiveness of North Atlantic right whales being injured through entanglement.
