Spring Loaded Technology recently signed a $1 million contract to provide their unique bionic knee braces to members of the Canadian military.

The company was founded by Chris Cowper-Smith (BSc’06, MSc’09) and Bob Garrish (BSc’05, MASc’12), who met at Dal in 2012.

The first of 60 braces have already been delivered to the Canadian Army headquarters in Ottawa, with another 130 to be delivered over time.

According to experts, soldiers carry 50 per cent more weight today than during World Wars I and II. This is mostly due to heavy batteries and other modern equipment.

Thorough testing of the braces on volunteer soldiers is currently underway.
