Fill the House
“We know that when people come to our region, it’s because of its people, its natural beauty — but it’s also about music, theatre, dance, the visual arts. And that shows up in our economy: the cultural sector contributes more than $1.5 billion to Nova Scotia’s GDP each year.
And that’s even more true in the future. Because in an age of technology, the skills that are most important are the ones that make us most human: creativity, collaboration, compassion. To grow our creative economy, to continue to attract and train the best and brightest talents, we need state-of-the-art cultural venues to match.” – Dalhousie President, Richard Florizone, Ignite, 2018
Dalhousie Arts Centre Expansion
During Ignite, Dalhousie President Dr. Florizone, announced the public phase of the Dalhousie Arts Centre enhancement. This is an opportunity for the community to elevate the performance arts in Atlantic Canada.
In 2013, the Fountain family’s generosity created a new era in performing arts at Dal. Their $10-million gift, which brought performing arts programs under one umbrella, has transformed program delivery, increased collaboration and created an extensive range of new opportunities for students while enriching their learning experiences.
The Fountain School is now poised to expand the impact of academic programs and community space that play vital roles in Halifax and Nova Scotia’s vibrant arts and culture scene through its Performing Arts Campaign. Well underway, the campaign, chaired by businessman Rob Steele, will create a modern, world-class performing arts destination for our students and community.
Together with our supporters, community partners, and government, we will significantly enhance the Dalhousie Arts Centre, including the new 300-seat Joseph Strug concert Hall, a Costume Studies studio, and more innovative practice and rehearsal spaces for students. It is here where our students will hone their talents, explore their artistic passions and reach their creative potential, and where we will continue to attract talented performers from around the province, the country and the world.
