Thomas Head Raddell

 

The Dalhousie community is saddened by the June 3, 2022 passing of Thomas H. Raddall (II) (DDS’61).

Tom was born in 1934 in Liverpool, N.S., a son of the late Thomas H. and Edith (Freeman) Raddall.

Tom attended Acadia University before coming to Dalhousie to study Dentistry, and he was an active alumnus with both universities. Tom was honoured to have received an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Dal’s Faculty of Dentistry in 2005.

“The dental profession has been enriched with the commitment and dedication of Dr. Thomas Raddall (II),” said Dr. Ben Davis, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry. “Through his varying leadership roles within organized dentistry and unwavering commitment to his community and patients, Dr. Raddall (II) humbly displayed his strong character and values.”

He dedicated himself to community organizations, his profession and to the preservation and promotion of his father’s legacy. He was also a great supporter of the Dalhousie University Archives, facilitating in the donation of his father’s papers. These papers include some 1,600 photographs, which included the pictures of him as a baby and boy appearing in this tribute.

He was a member of the Queens General Hospital foundation, President of the Liverpool Curling Club, Chair of the Queens County Museum, President of the Children’s Aid Society and President of the Kiwanis Club of Liverpool.

Tom was also a long-standing member of the Board of Governors, Acadia University, Chair of the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia, a member of various educational and faculty council committees, a Fellow of the Pierre Fouchard Academy and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.

Tom received the NSDA Philip S. Christie Award for Distinguished Service and he was the first recipient of the Acadia Student Union’s “Governor of the Year” Award. In 2013, received an honorary degree from Acadia University.

Tom possessed a quiet dignity, pragmatism and a leadership style that was inspirational.

“And he went on to inspire two generations of dentists to follow in his footsteps. He will be remembered fondly and the impact of his work and generosity will be felt well into the future,” said Dean Davis.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pam (White); his children Debbie (Clary) Kempton, Tom (Cathy) and Blair (Deborah); his grandchildren Matthew (Michele) and Jack Kempton, Thomas, Gavin, Brent and Ellen Raddall; and his brother- in-law Bill Dennis.
