Many Engineering alumni of the last decade will recognize Stan Selig (BEng’09 mechanical, MEng’12) as the dynamic host of Friday night T-Room Trivia – a Sexton Campus tradition that began in 2002. Since Stan took the reins in 2007, T-Room Trivia has won The Coast’s annual Best of Halifax ‘Best Trivia Night’ nine times including 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze awards.

Former T-Room trivia host, Stan Selig

Stan Selig (BEng’09, MEng’12) co-hosts his last T-Room Trivia in November after an 11 year run.

After 11 years, Stan – who works nearby in mechanical buildings engineering at CBCL Limited – hosted his last trivia night in November. We caught up with him to reflect on the last decade and find out what’s next.

When did you begin hosting T-Room Trivia?
I started hosting in 2007, with Thomas Craig after we had been playing trivia for a year or so and decided we were interested in trying our hands at writing and hosting.

Who were your co-hosts?
I had three long-term co-hosts in Thomas Craig, Matt Morrison, and Ben Schulman. All three of them brought new ideas and personality to the trivia nights. We also had a slew of friends and fans who helped host when one of us couldn’t make it, and that was always a lot of fun.

Why did you decide it was time to pass the torch?
Everything must come to an end eventually, and Ben and I had decided it was about time. We wanted to put hosting back in the hands of students, and we had two awesome engineering students (Gaby Beland and Taylor Roe) who were eager to try it out, so the timing worked out great!

What is your favourite memory over the years?
Having Jeopardy-super-alum Ken Jennings submit answers to a round of our trivia was amazing, and getting my super long hair cut off on stage during our finale this year was a lot of fun too!

What is next for you now that your Friday evenings are free?
Great question! What do people normally do on Friday nights? I have heard the T-Room has a trivia night that I might check out…
