Omar Gandhi (BEDS'03, MARFP'05)

The Globe and Mail has highlighted 36-year-old alumnus Omar Gandhi (BEDS’03, MARFP’05) as “Canada’s next top architect.”

Gandhi grew up in Brampton, Ont. and is now established in Halifax after graduating twice from Dalhousie’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

He is one of the country’s most well-praised young architects. In 2014, Gandhi won the Canada Council’s $50,000 Prix de Rome and was named on Wallpaper magazine’s list of the world’s top 20 young architects.

The Halifax-based architect is also a sessional instructor at Dalhousie’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

Gandhi’s firm, Omar Gandhi Architect, largely focuses on designing private homes with a modern Maritime style featuring unfinished raw materials and an effort to incorporate local landscapes into the designs.

He is now preparing to open a satellite office in Toronto, where he looks forward to “producing regionally inspired work” of a new form.
