Mission Possible: Ohio prof gives back
Professor Apollos Nwauwa (MA’89, PhD’93) recently carried out a medical mission in his home village of Uburuekwe, Nigeria. By coordinating a team of six doctors, 15 nurses and additional medical staff, Nwauwa fulfilled a lifelong dream of giving back to the village he came from.
The clinic was so popular that the team had to move locations to accommodate the number of patients. Nwauwa estimates that 600 to 1000 villagers received care from his team.
A mission to give back
The mission, which took place in October, was the first of what Nwauwa hopes will be many. He plans to turn it into an annual effort.
“Many people there have never seen a doctor in their life because they can’t afford it,” he says. “Some don’t know they have high blood pressure and drop dead and their family will never know what happened.”
Nwauwa moved to Canada to attend Dalhousie. He taught at Rhode Island College and Brown University before joining the History department at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
