Memory masters Andy Fong (BEng’06) and Angel Lai (BEng’06) train pupils in Hong Kong
Alumni Andy Fong (BEng’06) and Angel Lai (BEng’06) share a special bond besides that of their marriage: they are both masters of memory.
Lai is the 2012 champion of the Canadian Memory Championships. Her husband, Fong, is a Grand Master of Memory, a title bestowed by the International Memory Championships. Both are arbiters for the international competitions of memory.
According to Fong, while the ability to memorize digits at a high pace may seem like magic to onlookers, it is achievable with the right tactics. Memory sports also help maintain healthy brain activity.
The couple runs a memory training school in Hong Kong to help teach such tactics to students.
Lai and Fong are both graduates of Dalhousie’s Electrical Engineering program. They have since moved back to Hong Kong, after emigrating to Halifax with their families in their youth.
Memory sports are currently much less popular in Canada than in China, with only two Canadians in the world memory ranking system.
Fong would like to increase this number, and with the couple considering moving back to Halifax to open a memory training school someday, he may be able to do just that.
