George Furey (LLB’83) appointed Speaker of the Senate
The Governor General has named The Honourable George Furey (LLB’83) Speaker of the Senate.
Following the announcement of his appointment, Furey was escorted to the Speaker’s throne by fellow Dalhousie Schulich School of Law alumnus Senator Jim Cowan (BA’62, LLB’65, LLD’09) and Senate Opposition Leader Claude Carignan.
Liberal Senator Furey addressed his colleagues, speaking of their common opportunity to reinvent the Senate, reinforce the independent nature of their positions, and work together across partisan lines.
Furey has served in the Senate since he was appointed by Jean Chrétien in 1999.
