“Peter’s enormous passion for design and construction is expressed in every project he has done. His charisma and emotion is contagious in the office and inspires us to not only design ideas better, but to actually care intensely about how those designs are crafted” -BEDS student Matt Gillingham

Peter Braithwaite graduated from Dalhousie University with a Master of Architecture in 2012. After spending many years working in both the architecture and construction industries, Peter established Peter Braithwaite Studio out of his desire to create a company that encompassed both design and construction. Since its establishment the company has completed many interesting residential and commercial projects. The studio’s dedication to design excellence, and the highest standards of craftsmanship, is evident in the execution their projects. Peter began hiring co-op students in 2015, just three years after his own graduation.

Led by Director Joanne Firth, the co-op office in Architecture and Planning recently joined forces with Management Career Services & Science, Information Technology and Engineering to create the Dalhousie Co-op awards. A call went out to all Dalhousie co-op students who were on a work term during 2017 to nominate co-op employers who had provided them with exceptional opportunities and experiences. 113 nominations were received in 11 categories.

The student-led nominations were judged based on the quality of the work environment, projects and assignments, and supervision. The judging committee consisted of representatives from each of the faculty co-op offices – the directors of Career Services, a faculty representative and a student representative.

Peter Bratihwaite studio is the winner in the Design Services category.

Peter’s nomination revealed many of his leadership qualities and commendable personality traits. Bachelor of Environmental Design student Matt Gillingham, who nominated Peter based on his co-op experience last fall, was grateful to be offered opportunities to be challenged, to take on high levels of responsibility, and to contribute significantly to the design of major projects. Peter is described as supportive and constructive in reviewing designs and ideas and gives student employees a chance to build trust and work independently. Peter’s passionate commitment to quality and generosity inspires students to work hard, and to be better designers.

Many other alumni employers were nominated by students based on their excellent co-op experience including Nycum + Associates, DSRA, and TEAL Architects. The awards were presented at a reception at the Atlantica Hotel Wednesday March 21, 2018.
