Andy Fillmore (BEDS’90, MURP’92) elected new MP of Halifax
Voters in Halifax have elected Andy Fillmore (BEDS’90, MURP’92) as their new Member of Parliament. The Liberal MP won the Halifax riding with 51.6% of the vote.
The New Democratic Party had been in power in Halifax for the past 18 years, since Dr. Alexa McDonough (BA’65, MSW’67, LLD’09) was elected in 1997. Fellow Dalhousie alumna Megan Leslie (LLB’04) has served as MP since 2008.
With the federal election results from Atlantic Canada finalized, Andy Fillmore spoke to a crowd of 300 in Halifax around 10 p.m. yesterday evening. The urban planner and Dalhousie alumnus expressed sincere gratitude to voters and pledged to represent the interests of all of his new constituents, as a champion for Halifax.
Dal alumni from the Liberal Party succeeded across Nova Scotia. New MP Sean Fraser (LLB’09) won the riding of Central Nova, while incumbents Geoff Regan (LLB’83) of Halifax West, Scott Brison (BComm’89) of Kings-Hants, and Mark Eyking (Tech (NSAC)’80) of Sydney-Victoria were all re-elected.
Elizabeth May (LLB’83), leader of the Green Party of Canada, was also re-elected in her B.C. riding of Saanich–Gulf Islands.
