5 reasons you won’t want to miss Homecoming 2017
The leaves are beginning to change on campus, which means Homecoming is just around the corner! Each year, Homecoming weekend brings hundreds of alumni, students, faculty and staff together to celebrate being part of the Dalhousie community. Whether you prefer cheering on Tigers athletes in action, going back to class for an expert lecture, raising a glass with former classmates to toast fond memories, or bringing your kids along to family-friendly events, Homecoming 2017 has something for you.
Dal’s Halifax and Truro campuses will be buzzing with excitement during this year’s Homecoming weekend (October 11-15), as we prepare to celebrate Dalhousie’s 200th anniversary in 2018. Find out why you won’t want to miss out on the fun:
1. Catch up with old friends
Homecoming is all about the people. Reconnect with former classmates and make new friends at your faculty’s Homecoming events including milestone reunion gatherings in Agriculture and Dentistry and anniversary celebrations of the Occupational Therapy, MBA, Marine Affairs, and Industrial Engineering programs. Celebrate your shared Dal pride with alumni and students from all faculties at athletic events in Halifax and Truro.
2. See how the campus — and city — have changed
Dal’s campuses are constantly evolving. Retrace your steps and visit new additions through a campus tour, Agriculture’s John Higgins Memorial Garden Recognition, Law School Open House, Sexton Campus Construction Site Tours and Pharmacy Open House and College Tours. October’s crisp fall air and colourful leaves make it one of the best months to revisit campus and stir up nostalgia of your Dal days.
Speaking of nostalgia, the Halifax Alumni Reception and Light Art Tour offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the downtown Halifax of your student days while viewing public light installations created by artists from around the globe.
3. Engage in continued learning
Head back to class to learn from former professors and local experts during Homecoming. Hear insights from Ray Ivany at the JD McLean Lecture, learn about the impacts of the Halifax Explosion, and expand your knowledge on black holes and Canada’s cod collapse at Science Homecoming lectures.
Engage in continuing education opportunities for credit in Pharmacy and Dentistry and learn from fellow alumni at the MAP Alumni Panel and Law’s Alumni/Student Panel Discussion.
4. Savour tasty food and drink
There’s nothing like reconnecting with familiar faces over food, and luckily there’s a full menu of Homecoming meals awaiting you! Enjoy a healthy breakfast after the President’s Fun Run/Walk, delight in a lobster supper at the East Coast Lawbster Party, taste flavours of the world at the FASS Homecoming Celebration, indulge in waffles, tacos or donuts at the Agriculture Food Truck Fest, and sip tea with the Women’s Division.
You can also break bread with fellow alumni, friends and students at breakfasts in Computer Science, Management and Agriculture, a reunion lunch in Dentistry, and dinners in Medicine and Marine Affairs.
Plus, join in on a special Homecoming toast at the Halifax Alumni Reception and sample the new TUNS beer with Engineering.
5. Inspire your kids
Bring your aspiring young athletes to the President’s Fun Run/Walk or Rocky’s Run to encourage them to run or walk their first (or not!) 5K race. They’ll also have the opportunity to marvel at the athletic excellence of Dal Tigers teams at the Homecoming Hockey Night and Alumni Football Cup. Other family-friendly festivities include the Women’s Division Homecoming Tea and College Royal on the Agricultural Campus.
It’s a weekend you won’t want to miss! Can’t take our word for it? Read what your fellow alumni had to say about past Homecomings and this year’s festivities:
