For Seymour Schulich it’s all about the students.  The self-made billionaire and philanthropist’s precedent-setting $20 million benefaction to the faculty of law, now the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie, aims to make higher education more accessible.

And indeed, it has.

His generosity will allow one in five law students to attend the school tuition free according to Michelle McBride, president of the Law School Students Society. She adds, “in the true Weldon tradition, this school is for those who love the law, not just for those who can afford to study it.

In addition to the 40 new scholarships it has established, Mr. Schulich’s gift will also help students expand their horizons with what he calls the “dean’s super fund.” It will provide support for international exchanges, visiting scholars, student clubs and research.

The recipient of a $1,600 scholarship himself while a struggling student in Montreal, he knows first-hand the difference this kind of financial support can make. “My idea is that if you can help young people, then that’s what you should do,” says Mr. Schulich.
