Working and living in…Vancouver
As told to Claire Zimmerman
Allison Rockwell grew up in Vancouver, and returned home after completing her Bachelor of Commerce at Dal in 2004. She’s currently pursuing an MBA. Her favourite things about the city: access to the ocean and the mountains, the mild weather, and the city life.
Best networking spot
You can meet lots of people at trendy restaurant bars in Gastown on a Friday night.
Best volunteer opportunity
Anything you want, it’s here! I recommend getting involved with charity marathons and races or soup kitchens.
Best spot for a lunch meeting
The Four Seasons restaurant, Bacchus restaurant at the Wedgewood Hotel, where you can get good French food or a lovely afternoon tea.
Best place to get some East Coast flavour
Rodney’s Oyster House—because seafood.
What it’s like to work in Vancouver
Working in Vancouver is pretty laid back, but it’s also a bit cliquey.
What it’s like to live in Vancouver
Everyone that lives here loves it! It’s also a privilege to live in Vancouver—it is expensive!
Best place for Friday night fun
Anywhere in Gastown or Yaletown is bound to be a great time. And in West End, I like Black + Blue and Joe Fortes.
Best place to eat on a dime
The Naam Restaurant, a great vegetarian spot in Kitsilano. I also like Joyeaux Café, Marutama Ra-men, and the Guu restaurants located around the city.
Best local delicacy
Cartem’s Donuts, Thomas Haas chocolates and pastries.
Best neighbourhood for newcomers
Yaletown or West End are trendy, fun neighbourhoods where you can get a good feel for the city.
