Walter Fitzgerald

Walter Fitzgerald (BA’59, BEd’60, MA’67), the man who lived for the city of Halifax, died on October 11 at age 78.

Fitzgerald twice served as mayor of Halifax (1971-74, 1994-96) and served as the first mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality (1996-2000), after overseeing the amalgamation.

He also left his mark on Dalhousie. A former varsity tiger, Fitzgerald played football and captained the men’s hockey team. He was inducted into the Dal Sports Hall of Fame.
