David Huebert (BA’08) has won the 2016 CBC Short Story Prize for Enigma, a story about a woman’s decision to end the life of her beloved horse.

According the contest jury, “…Enigma is an eloquent meditation on the mystery of life and death, love and grief, both human and animal. This is a vivid personal narrative of remarkable spiritual and emotional grace.”

Prize winnings

Huebert will receive a cash prize of $6,000 and a writing residency at The Banff Centre. His story will also appear in Air Canada’s enRoute Magazine.

The Halifax-born writer previously authored a poetry collection called We Are No Longer the Smart Kids in Class. He is now based in London, Ont.
