Doctors Nova Scotia award recipients

Six alumni of Dalhousie Medical School have been recognized as “extraordinary physicians” and presented with awards for their contributions to improving health care in Nova Scotia. The award-winning doctors are linked to Dal either through their medical studies or through post-graduate medical (PGM) work, including medical residencies.

Dr. Mandat Maharaj (PGM’95) was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to raising the medical standard in neurology and for his commitment to providing professional development for local physicians.

Dr. Robert Sers (MD’76, PGM’87) was awarded the Rural Physician of the Year Award for his success in improving rural health care in the Antigonish area, particularly in regards to colorectal cancer screenings.

Dr. Leisha Hawker (MD’11) earned the Dr. William Grigor Award for her commitment to providing quality health care across Nova Scotia, with a special focus on Aboriginal health care, mental health care, and addiction treatment.

Dr. Peter Green (MD’95) was awarded the Physician Health Promotion Award based on his contributions to health promotion and legislation surrounding skin cancer.

Dr. Ormille Aubrey Hayne (MD’67) earned the Doctors Nova Scotia Senior Membership Award for his leadership and service as a renowned haematologist and professor for nearly 50 years (and counting).

Dr. R. Allan Purdy (MD’74, PGM’78) was presented the CMA Honorary Membership Award for his expertise and service in the fields of neurological and general medicine.
