Mark de Jonge, Moscow podium

L-R: Silver medallist Peter Menning (Sweden), gold medallist Mark de Jonge, and bronze medallists Edward McKeever (Great Britain) and Rivero Craviotto (Spain).

Olympic medallist Mark de Jonge (BEng’09) has paddled his way to a world championship win. He recorded a time of 33.961 in the K-1 200-metre final, earning gold at the 2014 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. The competition took place in Moscow, Russia.

The win adds to a series of impressive recent results; he also earned an Olympic bronze medal in 2012, a world championships silver medal in 2013 and a gold medal at the Sprint World Cup (Czech Republic) in May.

In his efforts to reach Sunday’s final, de Jonge broke the world record time set in 1992.

In another event, Genevieve Orton (BSc’13) and partner Una Lounder won the B final of the L-2 200-metre.
