Catherine BlewettPrime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced the appointment of Catherine Blewett (BA’86, MPA’90) to the position of Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

Blewett, a former Dalhousie Student Union president (1985-86), is currently clerk of Nova Scotia’s Executive Council and Cabinet secretary. Her new role in Ottawa is effective June 20, 2016.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil congratulated Blewett on the appointment, noting that “Catherine has made a significant contribution to public service in Nova Scotia and I am pleased she has been recognized nationally.”

“I have been very grateful for Catherine’s leadership as head of the provincial public service, and am proud of the fact that one of Nova Scotia’s most senior civil servants has the opportunity to take her passion and abilities to Ottawa.”

Blewett’s appointment comes as part of a recent shuffle in Trudeau’s ranks, as many now-retiring deputy ministers stayed on past the October, 2015 election to ensure a smooth transition.
