The group responsible for bringing the Nova Centre from concept to reality demonstrates how Dal’s engineering and architecture students can take teamwork far beyond the classroom.

Murray Tate (BEng’01), Tom Parsons (BEng (NSTC)’79), Daniel Grant (BEng’06, MASc’10), David Pottier (DEng’86, BEng (TUNS)’88), Aaron Everett (DEng’03, BEng’05), and Noel Fowler (BEDS (NSTC)’78, BArch (NSTC)’79) are all members of the team working to build the 1 million square foot mixed-use development in downtown Halifax. The completed Nova Centre will host retail, hotel, office, residential parking, and convention space.

The complexity of the project means that problems arise each day that require innovation and collaboration to solve, in a way that meets the goals of the project while minimizing disturbances to surrounding residents, businesses, and tourists. The various Dal alumni contributing to the project, however, see these challenges as exciting opportunities for hands-on learning on a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ kind of project.

With relationships being forged by alumni spanning several decades and coming from a wide range of firms, the foundation is not only being built for an iconic building in the heart of Halifax, but also for future collaboration.
