Industrial engineers with Wilson Fuel Co., Eric Noel (BEng’11) and Majd Hussini (BEng’09), are finalists in the second annual Canadian Open Data Experience hackathon, which was held Feb. 21 and 22. Their mobile phone app, Blazer, made it into the top 15 overall and into the top five in the youth employment category.

Blazer will connect employers with job seekers and vice versa. Users input their various information, and as possible matches in their region are discovered, they can swipe to the left to discard or to the right to show interest. Communication through the app will also allow users to ask questions about positions. However, the pair says there are still many details to work out.

Hussini and Noel, both “self-taught coders,” paired up after discovering their mutual interest in creating apps. Hussini was a big winner in Apps4Halifax in spring 2014.

All finalists will make their pitches on Monday in Toronto. The winners will be announced March 26. In the meantime, vote for Blazer in the fan favourite awards: votetowin.ca.
