Dal will receive a $2.5-million industrial research chair to study ways to improve data transmission underwater. Dal engineering professor Christian Schlegel will lead the five-year project.

“The underwater channel is, in a sense, a new and very challenging environment,” says Schlegel.

The project’s goal is to develop technology to carry high-speed data using underwater sound equipment. The project could improve other communication networks, including below ground, through rock and in outer space.
