When Dr. Steven MacDougall (MD’83) realized the extent of the recurring backlogs in emergency rooms across Nova Scotia, he decided to reform his practice.

The Sydney, NS family doctor has improved care for his roughly 3,000 patients by putting them back at the centre of his work.

Dr. MacDougall’s patients can now call his clinic and book appointments for the very same day, or even request house calls if they are unable to travel to the clinic.

With this new structure, cancellations and missed appointments have fallen from 25 percent to just four percent, while 30 percent fewer of Dr. MacDougall’s patients visit the emergency room.

Through this reconfiguration, Dr. MacDougall has improved the efficiency and quality of care he provides to his patients, setting an example for physicians across the province.
